DOST La Union has conducted Cleaner Production (CP) Assessment of three Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the province last May 31-June 3, 2016.
This year’s beneficiaries of the CP consultancy service are 818 Agriventures in Paagan, Bacnotan, Lawin 2010 Autoglass and Aluminum Supply and Iron Works in Sevilla, City of San Fernando, and Nutri Egg Incorporated in Bato, Naguilian.
CP Assessment is a tool developed by DOST to evaluate the root cause of loses incurred by MSMEs with the purpose of reducing waste generation in terms of raw materials, equipment capacity, time, and space. It encourages the use of cleaner technology to protect the environment with an added benefit of improving the firm’s efficiency and productivity.
The CP consultancy service was conducted by a multi-agency team led by DOST which visited the firms, identified the company’s issues and concerns regarding waste management and produced a detailed assessment report containing recommendations for low cost/low risk and feasible CP options.
This year’s team was led by Dr. Paulina P. Nebrida, DOST Assistant Regional Director for Technical Operations and was joined by Engr. Remedios Jimenez of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), Dr. Leonora Ngilangil and Ms. Desiree Vilar of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU)-Institute of Environmental Studies, and Engr. Anielyn Pai and Engr. Sulamita Flores-Catalan of DOST La Union Provincial Science and Technology Center.
