ILOCOS SUR, May 6 - The Ballaigi ti UNP DOST scholars (BUDS), in partnership with Ilocos Sur Electric Cooperative (ISECO), conduct the first phase of Project Youth Advocacy in Caring for the Aged and Persons with Disabilities (YACAP) held at Balay Taripato in Brgy. San Juan, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur.

The Project YACAP is an initiative of the DOST scholars which aims to provide necessities and extend help to the elderly. It includes giving foods supplies, toiletries, electric fans, and other goods to bring them comfort during their stay in Balay Taripato. A total of 14 elders are currently housed in the said institution who are being nursed by the 20 caregivers headed by a social worker.

During the program, Mr. Clarence Tukusin, ISECO main office representative, Engr. Gerardo D. Hortizuela, Area Manager of ISECO Sta. Cruz Sub-Office, and Mr. Mark Daniel Devis, BUDS President, gave inspiring and moving messages for the elderlies. The said event was filled with echoing laughter and radiating smiles from the elders.

Mr. Clarence Tukusin tackled the various programs of ISECO which centered on helping the different sectors of the community including the elderly sector. He has shared the values governing their cooperative which roots on their reason of partnering with DOST to provide goods for the elders. Meanwhile, Mr. Gerardo Hortizuela reiterated the importance of the contributions of the senior citizens in the community. He recognized them as valuable assets who should never be forgotten even after long years.

With the success of the activity, the DOST scholars plan to return to Balay Taripato to provide extra help to the elderly as part of the 2nd phase of the project.
