With the purpose to discuss the scholarship agreement, scholarship privileges, and scholarship obligations, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office 1 (DOST-1) Scholarship Unit conducted a virtual orientation to 40 new Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) qualifiers in Region 1 on August 20, 2021 via Zoom.
The orientation featured discussions on the provisions of the scholarship, their duties and responsibilities, and an open forum to clarify the queries and concerns of the qualifiers.
The JLSS is among DOST-SEI’s undergraduate scholarship programs, which aims to support education of third year college students enrolled in priority science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses from identified academic institutions. It has three component programs: a) RA 7687 program, which is meant for socioeconomically challenged students; b) Merit program, which is aimed at students with high aptitude in STEM; and c) RA 10612, a program that aims to accelerate the production of science and mathematics teachers in secondary schools in the Philippines.
After the discussion of the provisions of the scholarship, the qualifiers, altogether, signed their scholarship agreements which also means that they accept the said scholarship.
“You will be among the many PATRIOT scholars of the DOST, who will later be serving the country after your graduation. I congratulate all of you. Kayo ay mga iskolar ng bayan, para sa bayan,” said Dr. Armando Q. Ganal, DOST 1 Regional Director, as he congratulates the qualifiers.
Moreover, Ms. Adelisa C. Florendo, Technical Scholarship Coordinator of DOST-1, reminded the qualifiers that the scholarship given to them is a privilege which they need to value. They should also be mindful of their actions for they now carry DOST’s name, and lastly, the scholars are reminded to always be grateful.
To end the orientation, Atty. Jasmine C. Bañez, ARD for Finance and Administrative Services, also extended her heartfelt message to the qualifiers, “I congratulate each one of you for being considered as a qualifier for the JLSS scholarship in region 1. Welcome to DOST family. I just want to end this with a quotation from Robert Frost, ‘Two roads diverged in a road and I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference,’ and you made the difference because you are scholars.” (By Jessa Kate Parrocha, Project Assistant II, DOST-RO1)
